How do they do it?
We start with the sowing that goes from the end of February to the beginning of June. After a period of three or four months the plant blooms and a month later, the seed reaches maturity. It is harvested shortly after flowering.
With a sickle, the stems are cut close to the ground, tied into bundles and left for a few days to dry.
After removing the leaves and branches, the bundles are arranged for the retired
(fermentation process)
in running, stagnant but clean water. When the water temperature reaches about 30º, retting is completed in two or three weeks. Low-fermented fibers are sticky and difficult to spin; jute that is too thin is of little value and has no shine.
The fibers are separated from the wet stems, washed to loosen adhering bark, and spread out for drying. The bundles are folded down the center and compressed into bales, making the jute ready for transport and export.
